Heavy on my heart this month is the attached photo. I took this photo outside of a store that claimed to be selling tools for spiritual living. I couldn’t help myself. I walked in and asked, “what is spiritual living?” The pleasant sales clerk looked at me puzzled and her face changed. She snapped back, “you know getting closer to the peace we all need.” I asked, “how do I do that?” She said, “Look around you, we have crystals, oils, perfumes, spirit catchers, and more, take your pick.”

As you might imagine I held back. There wasn’t a single bible, not a single Christian help book, not a whiff (pun intended) of anything of eternal significance. Our culture is searching to fill the void but missing the person. The fifteen people perusing the store had no idea that Jesus had died for them and they need to search no longer. No higher plane, angel winged store is going to get you to a higher peace. Many of you have travelled this summer. I hope you were able to find rest, a restart, a vision for your ministry, and a word from God. Let’s pray that we can be the churches where people encounter a grace-filled answer to our community’s needs. The brokenness and willingness to hear is all around us. We need to get our people on a mission to bring lost people to the only tool (person) that will make a difference in their spiritual life; the bringer of peace, the author of forgiveness, the harbinger of love, Jesus Himself.
