Today was not unexpected. Dr. James Dobson, founder of the Focus on the Family Christian ministry and former advisor to five U.S. presidents, has died at 89. Sadly, the world where the nuclear family is priority is one step further away. Dr. Dobson began his impact on my life through my parents. When in the car we listened to Focus on the Family. We were fed tape cassettes in our family vehicles that echoed Dr. Dobson at different venues and with different topics, but always pro family. My parents read Dare to Discipline and it showed in their parenting. As a parent myself, I encouraged my children to listen to Adventures in Odyssey and often checked Plugged-in before considering letting my kids watch any movie.
That isn’t his only influence though, Dr. Dobson tirelessly sought to change our more splintered society and the family fragmentation he saw first hand. He loved families and in the 80’s and 90’s he utilized his political strength to reach into communities across the country with conservative, family values, getting candidates elected, pushing back against abortion, and supporting the fathers and mothers of every race in their endeavor to churn out children that will lead the next generation well. We as a nation will miss his positive influence, positive encouragement, and positive impact on the family. It was a good run Dr. Dobson, I am sure you were welcomed into your Savior’s arms. Way to finish well!
